At Cryo Body Doc in Oakton, Virginia, Dr.David Allingham, MD, MS uses microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to stimulate and support cellular repair and growth. What is Microneedling with PRP?

Microneedling with PRP (also known as a vampire facial) is a minimally-invasive, in-office procedure. A microneedling device creates tiny punctures in the skin triggering the body’s natural healing process, which promotes the growth of new collagen and elastin fibers. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is then applied to the treatment area.

PRP is a concentration of platelets and growth factors derived from your blood. Platelets not only help clot your blood when you have an injury but also carry proteins known as human growth factors that are essential to healing injuries and repairing damaged tissue. PRP injections activate fibroblasts and collagen production in your skin, plumping it from within and improving elasticity.

If you’re concerned about skin imperfections such as wrinkles, fine lines, dark circles, puffiness around your eyes, or a dull, uneven skin tone or texture, PRP could be an effective aesthetic treatment to enhance your appearance and take years off your face.

There are many benefits to microneedling with PRP, including:

  • Minimally-invasive
  • In-office procedure
  • Quick and easy
  • Safe for all skin types
  • No downtime
  • Natural results

The PRP Microneedling Procedure

Before the procedure begins, your face will be cleansed, and the doctor may apply a topical numbing cream to minimize discomfort. The numbing cream is not required as most patients can tolerate the treatment without it.

The treatment begins with the doctor drawing a small vial of your blood. He then spins your blood sample in a centrifuge, separating the various components. Your platelets and plasma are combined to create the PRP serum, which contains approximately eight times as many platelets as a regular blood sample.

When the serum is ready, it is injected into your skin using a small syringe and needle. The injections usually take 15-20 minutes.

After the Procedure

Over the next few weeks, the PRP serum stimulates new collagen growth in your skin, and you begin to see an improvement in the appearance and texture of your skin.

There is no downtime after microneedling with PRP; however, you may have some redness and swelling, which usually subsides within a few hours. To help with swelling and redness, the doctor may recommend that you apply a cold compress to the treatment area.

You should avoid sun exposure and harsh skin care products for at least 24 hours after the procedure. It’s also important to wear sunscreen when you go outside. You can use makeup after the procedure, but it is recommended to wait at least 24 hours.

For optimal results, Dr. Allingham may recommend that you have 3-6 microneedling treatments spaced four weeks apart. Maintenance treatments are recommended every 6-12 months.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Microneedling with PRP is suitable for most skin types. The procedure is minimally-invasive and has little to no downtime, making it an ideal treatment for busy people who want to improve their appearance without taking time off work or their social life.

Microneedling is a quick and easy therapy for reducing acne and has been shown to minimize scars and enhance skin hydration. However, if you have active or cystic acne, the doctor will not perform microneedling on those areas.

PRP Microneedling Treatment for Scarring

Microneedling with PRP can be used to improve the appearance of scars, including acne scars, surgical scars, and burn scars. The growth factors in PRP help to stimulate new collagen production, which can minimize the appearance of scars.

Are There Risks?

Microneedling with PRP is a safe and effective treatment with minimal risks. The most common side effects are temporary and include redness, swelling, bruising, and bleeding. These side effects usually resolve within a few hours or days.

Exosome Microneedling

Exosome microneedling is a new, cutting-edge treatment that is showing promising results in the improvement of skin appearance. Exosomes are bi-layer lipid acellular (non-DNA) messengers that are secreted by cells and act as intracellular communicators. Exosome Facials use the power of more than 2 billion lyophilized exosomes, coenzymes, minerals, amino acids, and vitamins to stimulate cell regeneration. They are involved in cell-to-cell communication, tissue repair, and the regeneration of damaged cells.

This procedure has been clinically proven to improve:

  • Age spots
  • Hydration
  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Pore size
  • Scars

The treatment should take between 20-30 minutes. The skin will generally have a mild pinkish appearance that fades in 24 to 48 hours. Exosome treatments can be added to Microneedling for an additional $500 per treatment.
