What is cellulite?

Cellulite is the name for skin that appears lumpy or dimpled. Also referred to as cottage-cheese or orange-peel skin, cellulite can appear anywhere on your body, but is most often found on the thighs, buttocks, and abdomen. Women are more likely than men to develop cellulite because of the difference in the distribution of fat, muscle, and connective tissue in their bodies.

What causes cellulite?

The exact cause of cause of cellulite isn’t fully understood, but medical researchers and doctors believe cellulite is caused by the interaction between your skin, the connective tissue beneath the surface of your skin, and your subdermal fat.

The connective tissue is like a mesh that supports both your skin and the tissue underneath, helping everything stay in place. Female connective tissue is arranged vertically and parallel to the fat tissue beneath while male connective tissue forms a criss-cross pattern.

The vertical arrangement of female connective tissue is weak and allows the underlying fat to bulge through the gaps, creating the dimpled appearance of your skin. Men’s criss-crossed connective tissue forms a stronger barrier between fat and skin, reducing their risk of cellulite.

Other factors contribute to your risk of developing cellulite. For example, if you have a family history of cellulite, your chance of developing the condition increases. Also, your risk of cellulite increases as you get older, if you eat a high-fat, high-salt diet, and if you lead a sedentary lifestyle.

How is cellulite removed?

Dr. Allingham offers a variety of noninvasive cellulite-removal procedures. He performs a comprehensive consultation and exam before recommending a specific treatment.

Shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy, sometimes called acoustic-wave therapy, stimulates collagen synthesis, lymphatic drainage, and fat breakdown with radial soundwaves. Dr. Allingham moves a hand-held device along your cellulite that delivers the waves through your skin.

Cryoskin therapy

Dr. Allingham uses the Cryoskin 3 device to deliver cold temperatures which widen your blood vessels and increase oxygen supply to your skin. The improved circulation and oxygenation boosts collagen production and breaks down cellulite.
